Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why use herbal medicines?

  • The practice of using herbal supplements dates back thousands of years. The use of herbal supplements is common all over the world.
  • A herb is a plant used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic properties. A product made from plants and used solely for internal use is called a herbal supplement. Herbal medicines are one type of dietary supplement. They are sold as tablets, capsules, powders, teas and extracts, or as fresh or dried plants.
  • People use herbal medicines to try to maintain or improve their health, to get relief from symptoms, boost energy, relax, or lose weight.
  • Herbal medicines contain active ingredients. Some pharmaceutical medications are based on a single active ingredient derived from a plant source. Practitioners of herbal medicine believe that an active ingredient can lose its impact or become less safe if used in isolation from the rest of the plant. For instance, salicylic acid is found in the plant meadowsweet and is used to make aspirin. Aspirin can cause the lining of the stomach to bleed, but meadowsweet naturally contains other compounds that prevent irritation from salicylic acid.
  • According to herbal medicine practitioners, the effect of the whole plant is greater than its parts.
